The exodus of desperate families escaping the brutal conflict in Sudan has continued unabated since it began in April 2023, with nearly 4 million refugees now living in neighbouring countries and beyond. So far, more than 770,000 Sudanese refugees have sought safety in Chad, one of the world’s poorest countries, and 86 per cent are women and children. This is in addition to 200,000 Chadian returnees who lived in Sudan as refugees.
The new arrivals are putting immense pressure on dwindling national resources. In Adré, for example, more than 280,000 Sudanese refugees currently live in overcrowded, spontaneous sites that have sprung up along the border, overwhelming the capacity of the local population of about 40,000 people.
Muntada Aid has been working in camps in and around Adre, Chad, since 2024. This year, we are distributing Qurbani to these refugees, who have very little access to food and water. We are also providing family food packs.
Because of the aid cuts to various UN organisations, there is a far greater need for food.
Your Qurani can go a long way in helping some of these vulnerable people.
Sudan’s unrelenting conflict risks setting off the world’s largest and worst hunger crisis. More than half the population, millions of families, are now experiencing crisis levels of hunger. Famine has spread to five areas in Sudan and could spread to 10 regions in the coming months, with a further 17 areas at risk.
Famine means people are already dying from hunger. Without immediate food aid, famine risks spreading further in 2025, threatening the lives of millions of people, mainly children, and exacerbating what is already one of the world’s most severe food crises.
We provide food packs in Port and Chad that last a month for a family of five.
It's a selection of food items that we provide to people who need our support, especially during an emergency like Sudan, where people are displaced by conflict. The selection of food is based on a family’s nutritional needs and geographic and cultural contexts.
Typically, it contains cereals, pulses, vegetable oil and iodised salt. The cereals may be wheat, maize, rice, sorghum, millet or other types of grain. Pulses include lentils, cowpeas, beans and yellow split peas. We are committed to buying food from local suppliers wherever possible and increasing the proportion of wheat flour, maize meal and fortified rice.
